Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) has released penal institution statistics.
According to statistics of 2014, number of people in penal institutions increased by 10.1% percent compared with the last year.
The stats suggest there are 158,690 people in penal institution by December 31, 2014.
Predominantly men
The date TÜİK released are as follows…
96.4% of those in penal institution are men
While 86% of the population in penal institution by December 2014 were convicted, 14% of it were arrestees.
96.4% of those were men while 3.6% were women.
Increase
- While 204 out of every 100,000 persons were in penal institution, the figure was 163 in 2010.
- 253 aged at/above 12 out of every 100,000 persons were in penal institution.
- 170,733 convicted entered penal institutions in 2014.
Entrance and exit records
- When one or more entering record of a convict within the same year is taken into account, 170,733 convicted entrances to the penal institutions were recorded in 2014.
- Again when one or more entering record of a convict within the same dates is taken into account, 135,784 convicted exits were recorded.
- Men constitute 96.3% of convicts entering, and 96.4% of convicts exiting.
- In 2014, 17.5% of the convicts committed robbery, 14.5% committed injury, 8.2% opposed Bankruptcy and Enforcement Law, and 5.2% committed homicide.
Education
31.6% of convicts consists of primary education.
26% percent of homicide convicts were high-school or higher education graduate.
The highest ratio in those opposing the Bankruptcy and Enforcement Law was seen in high-school or equivalent technical high schools. (YY/TK)
