The share of young people not in employment or education (NEET) is 41.7 percent among people with higher education in Turkey, according to the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.
Unveiling the "National Action Plan for Youth Employment," the ministry noted the NEET rates indicate "important problems" in the path from education to employment, daily Hürriyet reported.
The NEET rate is 23.1 percent for those with an education level below high school, 26.7 percent for those with high school degree and 34.2 percent for those with a technical high school degree, according to the ministry.
"It is noteworthy that NEET rates in Turkey increase as the education level rises, excluding the illiterate. A main reason for this is that people who graduated from primary school find jobs easier compared to those who received higher education," the ministry said.
The NEET rate among the people aged between 15 and 29 is the highest in the predominantly Kurdish-populated Southeastern Anatolia Region, the ministry also noted. Aydın, Denizli and Muğla provinces in western Turkey have the lowest NEET rates.
"The fact that NEET rates are much higher in economically and socially backward regions indicates the necessity of developing local strategies specific to regions in policy-making processes," said the ministry.
