Arrested pending trial and sentenced to 6 years, 3 months in prison for "membership of the organization", musician Hozan Canê has been released.
As reported by Deutsche Welle (DW), Newroz Akalan, the attorney of the musician, has spoken to the German Press Agency (dpa) about the release of her client and announced that Hozan Canê left the Bakırköy Prison in İstanbul on Wednesday evening (September 30).
Indicating that there is an international travel ban on her client, attorney Akalan has noted that the court admitted her defense that her prison sentence was disproportionate and ruled for her release.
The trial of Canê will continue on October 20 in Turkey's Edirne province, where she was taken into custody.
Kurdish musician Hozan Canê, also a citizen of Germany, was taken into custody shortly before the Presidential elections in 2018. Put on trial on charge of "membership of the organization" in November 2018, she was sentenced to 6 years, 3 months in prison on the offense charged.
The attorney of Canê appealed against the verdict. Handing down its ruling in August, the court concluded that there was no open and clear evidence proving that Hozan Canê was the "member of the organization." The prosecutor's office previously referred to the social media posts of the musician as the basis for its allegations.
The government of Germany had long been making diplomatic efforts to find a solution for the situation of its citizen Canê. (AÖ/SD)
