The Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) published the results of its Municipal Waste Statistics Survey 2018 today (October 2). Indicating that 1,395 out of 1,399 municipalities provided waste services last year, the Institute announced that the municipalities which provided waste services collected 32 million 209 thousand tonnes of waste.
Per capita waste per day: 1.16 kg
According to the survey results, the average amount of municipal waste per capita per day is calculated as 1.16 kilograms in 2018.
Considering the three largest cities of Turkey, the average amount of waste collected per capita per day was 1.28 kilograms for İstanbul, 1.18 kilograms for Ankara, and 1.36 kilograms for İzmir.
67.2 percent delivered to controlled landfill sites
Out of 32 million 209 thousand tonnes of waste collected by municipalities that provided waste services, 67.2 percent was transferred to controlled landfill sites, 20.2 percent to municipal dumping sites, 12.3 percent to waste recovery facilities and 0.2 percent was disposed of by other methods such as burning in an open area, burying and dumping into river/onto land.
