MPs Protest Transportation Minister over Deadly Train Collision

MPs of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) protested Minister of Transportation and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turan December 15 at the General Assembly of the Parliament over the deadly train collision which claimed the lives of nine people in Ankara.

When Turhan began his speech, CHP MPs opened banners saying "Resign" and chanted "Resign". Ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) MPs responded with clapping.

"What is necessary will be done"

After the protest, a short session brake took place. When Minister Turhan went up to the rostrum again, CHP MPs left the General Assembly without listening the Minister's speech. Turhan said the following on the train collision that caused nine deaths and 87 wounded:

"I wish God's mercy to our citizens who have lost their lives in the train accident. I wish that all our wounded people get well soon. The point that we focus on is human life and security. In this context, all-round investigations are continuing to find the cause of the accident. We will share the results with the public as soon as possible. Of course, what is necessary will be done regarding those who are responsible."

The Minister also mentioned the arguments about the signalization system:

"The signalization issue is continuously being debated. In the last eight years, we have increased the distance of the lines with signalization system to 5,746 km. In our railways, 746 trains serve daily with a signalization system and 493 trains serve without a signalization system. This is not indispensable." (EMK/VK)
