The Social Media and Digital Security Training, Application and Research Center (SODİGEM) Science Board of Anadolu University (AÜ) has released its "Report on Internet and Social Media Statistics from a Sociological Perspective as We Near the End of 2019".
Prepared by the center founded by AÜ President Şafak Ertan Çomaklı, the report compiles and compares the data provided by the Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat), We are Social, Hootsuite and Statista.
According to the report of the Science Board, while 3 billion, 480 million people are active users of social media and 4 billion, 380 million people are active users of the Internet across the world, these figures are 52 million and 59 million, 300 thousand for Turkey respectively.
Other highlights from the report are as follows:
91.7 percent of 25-34 age group use Internet
The report has shown that people in Turkey spend an average of 2 hours, 46 minutes a day on social media. While they watch TV for 3 hours, 9 minutes a day, they listen to music for 1 hour, 15 minutes on average.
The report has also revealed that 38.2 percent of men and 29.9 percent of women shop online in Turkey. While 67.2 percent buy clothing and sports equipment online, 31.7 percent spend for travel and accommodation.
According to the report, the global Internet use in 16-74 age group has increased to 75.3 percent in 2019. This figure was 61.2 percent in 2016, 66.8 percent in 2017 and it was 72.9 percent in 2018.
As for Turkey, while the highest rate of Internet use has been measured among the 25-34 age group with 91.7 percent, the lowest rate is among the ones aged 65 and older with 19.8 percent.
Highest Internet use among men
When compared by gender, the report has shown that the highest Internet use in Turkey is among the men aged 25-34 with 95.2 percent. This rate is 88.2 percent among women in the same age group. Moreover, 78 percent of social media users in Turkey are apparently at the ages of 18 and 44.
LinkedIn users on the increase
The rises and falls in social media use have also been documented by the report. Accordingly, 6 million, 300 thousand people use Snapchat in Turkey, which marks a 26-percent decrease when compared with last year.
The highest increase in the number of users has been measured in LinkedIn. There are 7 million 300 thousand LinkedIn users in Turkey, which marks a 5.8-percent annual increase. While the number of Instagram users has increased by 2.7 percent and that of Twitter users has increased by 1.9 percent, the number of Facebook users has fallen by 2.3 percent.
Taken together, there is a parallel between rates of social media use in Turkey and those of the world. (AÖ/SD)
