Men killed 214 women and 10 children, raped 167 women and teenager girls/ attempted to rape, used violence against 241 women and teenager girls, harassed 161 women and teenager girls. |
According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left 28 women/teenager girls killed, 10 raped, 35 injured, and 6 sexually harassed in October 2014.
Overall in 2014, male perpetrators left 235 women killed, 88 raped, 499 battered and 95 sexually harassed.
Murder
In October, men killed 28 women and teenager girls in 16 provinces across Turkey.
21 percent of women were slain for seeking a divorce. A man reportedly murdered his wife despite a court restraint order and previous attempts as well as being released from these charges.
Following the murders, 4 men committed suicide, 2 surrendered to the law enforcement officials.
39 percent of women were killed by their husbands. Murder perpetrator men were identified as husband (11), father (4), lover (2), ex-lover (2), brother (1), stranger (1), son-in-law (1), acquaintances (1) and unidentified (4).
While 53.5 percent of murders were perpetrated with guns, 46,5 percent were committed with knives. Murders were committed by the following methods: knife (13), gun (8), shotgun (4) rifle (3).
The murderers were aged between 16 to 50 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 12 to 52.
Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Ankara (2), Antep, Aydın, Bursa, Düzce, Edirne, Eskişehir, Giresun, Hatay (2),Iğdır, İstanbul (8), Kocaeli (2), Konya (3), Mersin, Zonguldak.
Rape
In October, 10 rape cases appeared on the media.
Rapes were committed in the following venues: On the street (1 case), abduction venues (3 cases), apartment (6 cases, 60 percent).
Rape perpetrator men were identified as ex-lover (2), local business owner (1), friends (2), stranger (5). 1 woman was forced to prostitution. Half of the perpetrators were acquaintances of women.
While one woman was not a citizen of Turkey, another was mentally disabled.
The rapists were aged between 27 to 58 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 17 to 38.
Rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Aksaray, Ankara (4), Eskişehir, İstanbul and Trabzon.
Battery/Assault
In October, men battered 35 women and teenager girls in 17 provinces across Turkey.
17 percent of women were battered for either seeking divorce or in the process of a divorce trial or leave home.
Another gun victim woman had issued a restraint order for her violent husband.
71 percent of women were subjected to male violence by their husbands (25). Other violence perpetrators included: lover (3), ex-husband (1), local business worker (1), son-in-law (1), son (1), father (2).
While 66 percent of women (23) were battered, 28.5 were wounded by guns (3 with rifles, 2 with pistol, 4 with knives, 1 strangling). Two were threatened.
Following one incident, one man committed suicide.
The male aggressors were aged between 41 to 81 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 13 to 85.
Battery/Assault cases were reported in the following cities: Aksaray, Antalya (2), Aydın, Bolu (2), Denizli, Erzurum, Eskişehir, İstanbul (2), Kayseri (3), Konya (2), Kütahya (2), Muğla, Sakarya (2), Samsun, Trabzon (11), Van and Yozgat.
Harassment
In October, 6 sexual harassment cases across 4 cities appeared in the media.
66 percent of the women (4) were harassed by men they didn’t know. Other perpetrators included ex-lover (1), lover (1).
Harassment venues/platforms included vehicle (1), on the street (5 cases with 83 percent).
Sexual harassment incidents were reported in the following cities: Bolu, Isparta (2), Kırşehir and Zonguldak (2).
Regional distribution
In October 2014, 79 cases of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and battery were reported across 31 provinces across Turkey.
79 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (18), Aegean (6), Mediterranean (10), Black Sea (20), Eastern-Anatolia (3), Central Anatolia (21) and South-Eastern Anatolia (1). (ÇT/BM)
