According to data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male perpetrators left 24 women, 5 children and 5 men dead, 14 raped and 9 battered September 2013.
It turned out that 3 women were slain even though they filed for protection and another was forced to marriage at the age of 14.
One men killed his wife despite a court restraint order and another left his wife severely wounded.
While 83 percent of women were slain by their husbands, 53 percent of women were raped by their acquaintances.
Overall in 2013, male violence left 146 women dead, 132 raped, 155 battered and 117 sexually harassed.
In August, male violence left 24 women and 1 teenager girl dead, 21 women (including teenager girls) raped, 19 battered, and 7 sexually harassed.
Murder
In September, male perpetrated violence left 24 women, 5 children and 5 men dead across 17 different cities in Turkey.
While one man reportedly raped a slain woman, another committed suicide after the incident. Two others attempted to commit suicide and 2 more surrendered to the police.
It turned out that one woman was slain despite her protection applications to the governor’s office, prosecutor and gendarmerie headquarters.
Another man murdered his wife and mother-in-law despite a court restraint order. While one murderer was jailed for 20 days due to domestic violence. A woman, 16, was killed after two years of forced marriage.
83 percent of women were slain by their husbands. September murder perpetrators included husband (8), father (3), ex-husband (2), brother-in-law (2), honor-related enemy (2), strangers (2), neighbor (1), son(1), son-in-law (1), lover (1) and thief (1).
While 75 percent of murders were committed by guns (12), other murder instruments included shotgun/rifle (6) and knife (6).
September’s make violence also affected men. 4 men were murdered and 1 wounded after attempting to prevent murders. One man was slain by another man who allegedly said: “I will make love with your lover now. If you resist, I will take you to the police station.”
The murderers were aged between 20 to 75 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 16 to 69.
Female murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana, Aksaray, Antalya, Antep, Burdur (2), Bursa, Diyarbakır (2), Elazığ (2), İstanbul (2), İzmir (2), Mardin (2), Muğla (2), Nevşehir, Osmaniye, Samsun, Urfa and Zonguldak.
Rape
Men raped 14 women across 9 cities in Turkey. 50 percent of September rape victims were aged between 16 and 18 years old.
In September 2013, women were raped mostly by their acquaintances. 29 percent of rapes took place in apartments.
September’s rape perpetrators included strangers (6), husband (2), ex-husband and friend (1), lover (1), police officer (1), doctor (1), cyber friend (1).
September’s rape venues included apartment (4), on the street (3), car (3), workplace (3), abduction house (1).
The rapists were aged between 19 to 54 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 16 to 35.
September’s rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Antalya (2), Aydın, Bursa, Edirne, İstanbul (2), Samsun (3), Şırnak and Tekirdağ.
Battery-Assault
Men assaulted/battered 9 women across 8 cities in September 2013. One man reportedly committed suicide after the incident. Another man assaulted his ex-wife with a knife despite court restraint order.
September’s male aggressors were husband (4), ex-husband (1), lover (1), father (2), stranger (1).
While 4 women were assaulted with a knife, others were either battered (3), shot with a gun (1), thrown gasoline for burning attempt (1).
September’s male violence victims were aged between 24 and 36.
Battery-Assault cases were reported in the following cities: Antalya, Edirne, Erzurum, İstanbul (2), Mersin, Nevşehir, Tekirdağ and Zonguldak.
Regional distribution
In September 2013, 48 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, rape, injury and child abuse were reported across 23 cities.
48 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (12), Central Anatolia (3), Aegean (5), Mediterranean (12), Black Sea (6), Eastern-Anatolia (6) and South-Eastern Anatolia (4). Most cases were reported from Istanbul. (ÇT/BM)
