According to the news compiled by bianet from local and national newspapers, news websites and agencies, men killed at least 21 women and raped seven women in Turkey in June 2020.

The deaths of at least 31 women were reported in the news as suspicious (in Burdur, Mardin 5, Mersin, Diyarbakır 2, Ankara 2, Samsun, Bursa, Denizli, Maraş, Adıyaman, Balıkesir 2, Aydın, Zonguldak, Antep, Kayseri, Ağrı, Burdur, Bayburt, Düzce, Nevşehir, Samsun, Urfa, Giresun).
While the death of one woman in Turkey's southeastern Diyarbakır province was reported in the press as an "unidentified murder," one woman used her right of self-defense in Adana province.
Men attempted to kill one woman and threatened three women with death in İstanbul. Men also carried out sexist attacks against the LGBTI+s in İstanbul and Mersin, injuring at least three of them.
State officials, including President and ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, uttered sexist and discriminating remarks about the LGBTI+s, targeting them in their speeches.
2019-2020 Male Violence In the first six months of 2019, men killed at least 160 women, harassed 104 women, abused 120 children and raped 21 women. According to the news reported in the press, men wounded 220 women and forced at least 229 women to sex work in the first five months of last year. In the first six months of 2020, men killed 123 women, harassed 61 women, abused 134 children and raped 31 women. Forcing at least 444 women to sex work, men also inflicted violence on at least 291 women in this period. |

In June 2020, men killed at least 21 women. In the same month last year, men killed 34 women.
One of the women killed in June 2020 was a citizen on Uzbekistan. One man killed two children of a woman and the father of another woman. One man killed one woman while she was sleeping.

The "excuses" of men to kill 14 women were not reported in the press. While men killed four women "because they wanted to break up," men killed one woman due to "love," one woman due to "economic problems" and killed one woman because "he was angry."

Previously committed feminicides reported in the press in June * On May 24, a woman named Gülsüm T. was found dead at her home in Manisa. The autopsy report concluded that she died of an heart attack. On June 11, a man named C.Y. confessed that he killed the woman. C.Y. first said that he was in a relationship with the woman and found her dead; then, he confessed that he strangled her to death. He then attempted to commit suicide. He was arrested and sent to prison on charge of "wilful killing." * Reported missing in İstanbul in July 2019, Ayşe A.'s dead body was found buried in the woods. During the interrogation, a relative of hers named M.T. (53) confessed that he killed the woman. The man said that they had a row due to "jealousy" and "his gun went off." |
Murdered children
Men killed three boys in June. While two children were killed by their father, one child was killed by his step father.
Men killed two children with a firearm and one child by strangling him. The death of one child in Giresun was reported in the press as "suspicious."

Previously committed murders of children reported in the press in June * It was found out that M.A.B. (20) killed his sister İrem B. (17) in an "honor killing" on November 7, 2019. It was stated that M.A.B. killed the girl upon a "family council" decision. When the incident happened, it was alleged that İrem B. committed suicide. The girl was allegedly five months pregnant, the family came from Urfa to Mersin 20 days before the incident and pressured M.A.B. into killing the pregnant child. M.A.B., father S.B., mother M.M., elder brother V.B. and paternal uncles İ.B., K.B. and M.V.B. were detained. Having confessed to the murder, M.A.B. said that he had been forced to do it by his father, mother and paternal uncles. |
Rape
Men raped at least seven women in June. Last June, this number was four. While one of the women was from Syria, one was from Afghanistan.
One woman was raped by her husband, one woman by her boyfriend, one woman by her relative and one woman by her neighbor. The Afghan woman was raped by three men that she knew, but the relation among them was not reported in the press. The relation / acquaintance of two women and the men who raped them was not reported.
Men killed three women at home. While it was not reported in the news where men raped three women, they raped one woman in a container.
The men who raped the Afghan woman also tried to took her money.

Previously committed rapes reported in the press in June * In Kırklareli province, a chief physician named A.Ç. was arrested on the ground that he sexually abused a doctor woman by putting her to sleep with drugs and alcohol. The incident took place on May 30, but was reported in the press on June 23. * A worker named O.N. (54) sexually assaulted a woman named B.B. (20) at the house where he went to repair a bedstead. The incident happened on May 14, but was reported in the news on June 8. |
Judicial process There were nine perpetrators, none of them was arrested. While one of them was detained, he was released afterwards. Harassment
Men harassed at least 13 women in June. This figure was 34 in the same month last year.
Women did not know 13 of the men harassed them. Men harassed nine women verbally and physically, at least two by taking photos of their legs and publishing them on social media, one by showing them their sexual organ, and one woman by stalking her from the window.
Men harassed 10 women in non-home areas such as an ambulance, a hospital and a park, two women at home and one woman at the workplace.

Child abuse
In June, men abused at least 46 children, including boys. This number was 35 in the same month last year.
One of the children abused by men was from Syria. At least two of the perpetrators were previously arrested for the same crime.
One child was abused by her boyfriend, one by his/her mother's friend, two by their grandfathers, two by their teachers, one by a man who claimed to be the "fiance" of the girl, and two by their relatives. The degree of acquaintance between the children and 37 men was not covered by the press.
Men abused 11 children in non-home areas (streets and parks), six children at the workplace, nine children at home, and three children in or vicinity of the school. Where men abused 17 children was not reported in the press.

Violence / Injury
Men inflicted violence on 61 women in June. This figure was 72 in the same month last year.
Among the women, the health condition of four women was reported as "severe." Men had been systematically violent with three of the women whom they injured.
One of the women had disabilities. Men also attempted to rape a women they injured.
At least two women were injured because no action was taken about their repetitive applications for protection. In one case, it was observed that the man did not comply with the restraining order.

At least 47 women were subjected to violence from their husbands/boyfriends, ex-husbands/ex-boyfriends, four women from their fathers, elder brothers or sons, two women from their relatives, one woman from her patient (counselee). Seven women did not know those who inflicted violence on them.
Men's "excuses" for inflicting violence on 56 women were not reported in the press. Men inflicted violence on one woman for "being jealous," three women for "wanting to break up, and one woman for "disagreement over land."
Men injured 45 women by beating, eight women by firearms and seven women with knives. Men inflicted digital violence on at least one woman.
Judicial process Only seven of the perpetrators were arrested. One perpetrator was released one day after being arrested. At least 18 perpetrators were taken into custody. One perpetrator was sentenced to "house arrest." Restraining orders were issued against at least six perpetrators. Forced sex work
Men forced at least 93 women to sex work in June. This figure was 45 in the same month last year.
There were also girls among those who were forced to sex work. 26 of the women were not citizens of Turkey. There women whose passports were taken away from them and threatened.
Judicial process There were 116 perpetrators but only nine of them were arrested. The judicial process about one perpetrator was not reported in the press. While 10 perpetrators were reported by the press as "released," the only information reported about 96 perpetrators was their detention. |
Explanation The bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report only covers women who lost their lives as a result of male violence. We do not include any violence cases or crimes that are not gender-based. Throughout the year, we keep track of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths of women in separate monthly tallies but do not add them to the number presented in the headline. At the end of the year, we examine these cases of unidentified murders and suspicious deaths to determine whether the crimes were gender-based. We add the gender-based incidents into the report. We do not include any murders in the reports that are committed by people with psychological disorders (such as murders committed by people with schizophrenia). We include suicide or suicide attempt incidents in the tally only if the woman was subjected to violence/ systematic violence in her past. We cover these suicide incidents in a separate category and do not add suicide cases to the number presented in the headline. In addition, we don't include femicide cases that occur in a mass murder in which the woman was not directly targeted under the condition that the debated incident is not gender based either. Occupations of the offenders only included in the reports when the incident of violence is related to the occupation of the offender. For example, "Woman was murdered at home by his husband, who is a professional soldier." We add the violence committed on children by men, to make the extent of violence visible. |
