According to data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male perpetrators left 20 women dead, 18 raped, 2 women forced to prostitution; 24 battered; 12 harassed, 2 blackmailed with inappropriate images; 2 threatened with death in April 2015.
In the first four months of 2015, men killed 94 women; raped 42; forced 102 to prostitution; harassed 100.
Murder
In April, men killed 20 women and 2 children and 4 men near them. Besides, 8 women were found unexpectedly dead; 6 of them were claimed to commit suicide; perpetrators of two dead women have not been found.
40% of women were slain by their husbands, 20 % of women were slain by their lovers, and 15% of women were slain by their ex-lovers in April. 7 women were slain by their husbands, one of them was slain by religiously wed husband, 4 of them were slain by their lovers, one of them was slain by ex-husband and the others were slain by their ex fiancé, ex-lover, friends, family members and their friends.
40% of murders were committed by gun, 25% murders were committed by knives, 20% murders were committed by strangling and 10% murders were committed by slitting throats. Murders were performed with knives (5), pump rifle (4), pistol (3), rifle (1), by strangling (4), by slitting throat (2), battering (1).
%20 of women were killed because they wanted to divorce/break up or refused to get married /reunite.
A woman was killed in spite of her husband’s temporary debarment. Another woman made a complaint about her husband but she withdrew because of the threats. One of the murders took place near a police station.
In April, two perpetrators committed suicide after murdering. Another one gave himself over to the police.
The murderers were aged between 20 to 56 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 21 to 58 in April 2015.
Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Ankara (2), Antep, Bursa, Hatay, İstanbul (2), İzmir, Kırıkkale, Manisa, Maraş, Mardin, Mersin, Osmaniye, Samsun, Siirt and Uşak (2).
Rape
In April, men raped 18 women in 11 different cities across Turkey. Men forced two women to prostitution.
61% of females who were raped were under the age of 18.
5 rapists were released after their statements had been taken; 9 rapists were arrested.
16.6% of rapists were taxi, minibus and school bus drivers, 16.6% of rapists were men whom victim females met on the internet, 11% of rapists were public officers. Rapists in April were identified as taxi driver (1), school bus driver (1), minibus driver (1), public officer (1), school principal and a teacher (1), association’s provincial director (1), family member (1), ex-lovers (2), men on social media (3), friends (2), stranger male (1). 3 rapists were not found.
27,7% rape case took place in houses where female victims were kept by force, 22,2% rape case took place in houses of victims. Places where rape case took place were as harasser’s house (5), victim’s house (4), woods (2), street (2) and school bus (1). Four places where rape case took place were not in the news.
While rape case perpetrators were aged between 19 and 53, rape case victims were aged between 12 and 84 in April.
Rape cases in April were reported in the following cities: Adana (5), Antalya, Balıkesir, Bolu, Erzurum, Hatay, İzmir (2), Kayseri, Kocaeli, Mardin (3) and Urfa. Forcing to prostitution took place in Antep and Kayseri.
Battery-Assault
In April, men battered 24 women. Two battery cases took place in front of the court.
%12.5 of women were battered because they wanted to divorce or refused to reunite. %8 of women were battered in spite of her husband’s temporary debarment.
62.5% of women were battered by their husbands: other perpetrators were husbands (15), son-in-law (2), ex-husband (1), father (1), family members (3), employer (1) and stranger (1).
50% of cases were performed with death causing ways; 12 women were battered, 6 of them were injured with knives, 2 of them were injured with pistols and four of them were injured with rifles.
A man committed suicide after injuring his wife with a gun.
In April violence cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Adıyaman, Aksaray, Aydın, Balıkesir, Çorum, Denizli, Diyarbakır (2), Hatay (3), İzmir (2), Kırıkkale, Malatya, Mersin (2), Sakarya, Trabzon (3), Zonguldak.
Harassment
In April men harassed 12 women; blackmailed two women and threatened two women with death.
75% of harassment cases were physical abuse. Other cases included digital harassment (1), verbal abuse (1), and stalking (1).
67% of harassment cases took place in the street, 17% of them took place in elevator; in changing room (1), via cell phone and internet (1).
Harassment cases in April were reported in the following cities: Antalya, Adıyaman, Hatay, İstanbul, Kütahya (3), Muğla and Samsun (5).
Blackmail
A woman and a girl were blackmailed with their inappropriate images. One of them was via internet and the other one was in a school. One of the perpetrators was a male, the other one was a school friend.
Threat
Two women were threatened with death: Via telephone (1), in a workplace (1).
Perpetrators: ex-lover (1), ex-husband (1).
Threat cases took place in Trabzon and Kocaeli.
Regional distribution
In April 2015, 79 cases of violence against women, murder, attempted murder, harassment, rape and injury were reported.
79 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (9), Aegean (14), Mediterranean (22), Black Sea (13), Eastern-Anatolia (2), Central Anatolia (7) and South-Eastern Anatolia (12). (ÇT/BD)
