According to the reports bianet compiled from national and local newspapers, news websites and agencies, men killed 19 women in December; imposed violence on 27 women; raped 11 women and girls; forced 12 women and girls to prostitution; sexually harassed 13 women and girls.
Men killed at least 278 women in 2015, raped 133 women and girls, forced 202 women to prostitution, harmed 368 women, harassed 208 women.
Murder
Men killed 19 women in addition to two men and two boys near them in December.
Perpetrators of four women are yet to be determined. Body of a woman who suspiciously died was found on the street.
21% of the murderers were ex-husbands. 16% of women were killed for seeking divorce.
Two women had filed a criminal complaint against their murderers over threat, insult, injury, forcing to prostitution.
One of the murderers in December committed murder by escaping from the prison. A woman murderer had been convicted of sexual assault, and other one had been convicted of injury.
42% of women were killed by their partners (husband, lover, fiancée). Five women were killed by their husband, two by their ex-husband, one by her fiancée, three by their brother, one by her mother’s lover, one by her father, one by her housemate, one by a man who claimed to be her friend. 53% of the murders were committed by firearms, 47% by knife and sharp objects.
The age of murderers ranged between 20 and 63, and the women murdered ranged between 20 and 55.
The cities where femicide took place are Antep (3), Aydın (2), Bingöl, Bursa (2), Erzincan, İstanbul (2), İzmir, Kars, Kayseri, Kırıkkale, Kırklareli, Konya, Samsun and Trabzon.
Violence-injury
Men injured 25 women in December, one man threw molotov cocktail on his wife’s house, and one man seized his fiancée whom he inflicted violence.
22% of the women were heavily wounded in attempted murders.
15% of the women were exposed to violence for seeking divorce or rejecting the make-up proposal.
One woman was wounded despite protection order, and another one was injured despite filing a criminal complaint against her husband 25 times.
63% of the women were subjected to violence by their husband, and 18.5% percent were exposed to violence by their ex-partners.
17 of them were exposed to violence by their husband, one was by her ex-lover, and one was by a harasser man.
22% of the violence-injury cases were actualized by knife, rifle and pistol: Two women were wounded by knife, 19 by being battered, two by rifle, two by pistol. A man threw a molotov cocktail on his wife’s house, and another one kidnapped his fiancée.
The age of men imposing violence ranged between 19 and 47, and the age of the women exposed to violence ranged between 18 and 41 in December.
The cities where violence-injury incidens took place are Adana (3), Aksaray (4), Aydın, Bolu, Denizli (3), Diyarbakır, İstanbul (6), Kastamonu, Kocaeli (2), Manisa, Maraş, Muğla, Samsun and Trabzon.
Rape
11 rape incidents from six provinces took place in media. 11 women and one girl who are not citizens of Turkey were forced to prostitution in Antalya, Çanakkale, İzmir, İstanbul and Muğla.
82% of women and girls were raped by men they knew. One girl was raped by her relative, one woman by her employer, one by her lover, three were by their male friends, one girl was raped by men she met on social media. The proximity of two girls raped by men weren’t mentioned in the reports. Two women were raped by men they didn’t know.
36% of rape incidents took place in women’s houses, 27% in where they were detained, 18% in their workplaces.
One of the women raped was tortured; one was battered and lost an eye. One girl was blackmailed over rape footage.
The age of rapists ranged between 23 and 64, and the age of the women raped ranged between 12 and 32.
The cities where rape incidents took place are Adana (3), Denizli, İzmir (2), Muğla (2), Samsun (2) and Uşak.
Harassment
13 harassment incidents reflected in media in December.
31% of women were harassed by men they knew: One women was harassed by her ex-lover, one by her professor, one by a taxi driver, one by a man she knew, nine by men they didn’t know.
54% of the harassment incidents took place on street: Seven of the incidents took place on street, two in car, one in elevator, one at school, one in a mall. Whereabouts of one rape incident was not mentioned in the reports.
Two of 13 harassers had a criminal record on sexual harassment.
The age of harassers ranged between 19 and 62, and the age of the women harassed ranged between 15 and 46.
The cities where harassment incidents took place are Batman, Giresun, Isparta, İstanbul (2), Karabük, Kastamonu, Manisa, Sakarya, Samsun (3) and Uşak.
Distribution by regions
In total 82 incidents of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and injury reflected in media.
Of all these reports, 30% took place in Aegean Region, 22% in Marmara Region, 17% in Black Sea Region, 12% in Mediterranean Region, 8.5% in Central Anatolia Region, 6% in Southeastern Region, and 4% in Eastern Region. (ÇT/TK)
