Men killed 214 women and 10 children, raped 167 women and teenager girls/ attempted to rape, used violence against 241 women and teenager girls, harassed 161 women and teenager girls. |
According to the data based on reports in local and national newspapers and news agencies, a compilation made by bianet revealed that male violence left 17 women/teenager girls killed, 26 raped, 56 injured, and 13 sexually harassed in June 2014.
Overall in 2014, male perpetrators left 129 women killed, 58 raped, 292 battered and 57 harassed.
Murder
In June, men killed 17 women/teenager girls in 10 cities across Turkey.
While one woman was slain for seeking divorce, another woman was killed despite the court restraint order for her husband who excused to see his children. 17.6 percent of women were killed for seeking divorce.
53 percent of women were killed by their husbands, which was followed by other male relatives (17.6 percent). Murder perpetrator men were identified as husband (9), male relatives (3), neighbors (2), lovers (2) and man with turned down proposal (1).
One of the woman killed by her relatives reportedly complaint that “she wanted neither a husband nor children. Another woman, on the other hand, was killed due to “neighborhood gossip”. A third woman committed suicide after receiving death threats from a restraint husband.
While 47 percent of murders were perpetrated by knives, 41 percent were committed by guns. Murders were committed by the following methods: knife (8), gun (7), beating (1), pushed from the balcony (1). A village guard reportedly murdered his wife with his duty weapon.
Following the murders, two men attempted to commit suicide, another man killed himself. Two also surrendered to law enforcement officials.
The murderers were aged between 17 to 74 years old; while female victims' ages differed from 14 to 74.
The female murder cases were reported mostly in Istanbul. Murder cases were reported in the following cities: Ağrı, Denizli, Erzurum, Eskişehir (2), İstanbul (7), İzmir, Samsun, Sivas, Şırnak and Tekirdağ.
Rape
In June, men raped 26 women in 8 cities across Turkey.
92 percent of women were raped by unfamiliar men in abduction venues. While one woman was raped by her doctor, another teenager girl was raped by her stepfather.
20 women were forced to prostitution under abduction. Two teenager girls were mass raped.
Rape cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (2), Antalya, Artvin, Aydın, İstanbul (2), Sakarya, Şırnak and Tokat.
Battery-Assault
In June, men battered 56 women and teenager in 25 provinces across Turkey.
9 percent of women were battered for either seeking divorce or attempting to break up from a lover.
One man severely injured his wife with a gun despite a court restraint order. Another woman and her mother were severely injured by her ex-husband, an incident that allegedly was unregistered by police authorities.
55.3 percent of women were subjected to male violence by their husbands. Other violence perpetrators included: Male relatives (brother, father, son, other) (7), ex-son-in-law (1), ex-husband (5), ex-lover (1), office officials (2), husband (31), neighborhood administrator (1), bus driver (1), strangers (2) and lover (5).
70 percent of the male violence cases took place in the form of battery compared to 14.2 by knives and 10.7 by guns. Other methods included hitting with a hammer (1), torture (2).
While one man initially assaulted his wife with a knife and then with a pistol, another man burnt down their apartment after battering his wife.
Battery cases were reported in the following cities: Adana (3), Aksaray, Ankara, Antalya (3), Antep (2), Aydın (2), Batman, Bolu (4), Bursa, Çorum (5), Denizli, Diyarbakır (2), Erzurum, Eskişehir (2), Hatay, İstanbul (4), İzmir (4), Kayseri (6), Kocaeli, Konya (2), Sakarya (3), Samsun, Tekirdağ (2), Trabzon (2) and Yozgat.
Harassment
In June, men harassed 13 women and teenager girls in 11 cities across Turkey.
46 percent of the women (6) were harassed on the street.Other harassment venues included apartment 94), elevator (1), cram school (1) and on the phone (1).
61.5 percent of the women (8) were harassed by men they didn’t know. Other perpetrators included teacher (1), husband on divorce (1), father (1), friend (1) and relative (1).
Harassment perpetrators were aged between 19 and 45, harassment victims were aged between 12 and 49.
Sexual harassment incidents were reported in the following cities: Adana, Antalya, Bolu, Bursa, İstanbul, Kayseri, Kocaeli (3), Kütahya, Malatya, Sakarya and Samsun.
Retaliation to male violence
In June, 5 retaliation to male violence cases were reported in 5 cities across Turkey.
While 4 women murdered their violent husbands, another woman battered her violent husband with an iron bar as he was asleep.
Another man, on the other hand, murdered his brother-in-law saying the he raped his wife.
Regional distribution
In June 2014, 112 cases of male violence, murder, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and battery were reported across 32 provinces across Turkey.
Black Sea Region was rated as the most violent in June 2014. 112 incidents were distributed according to regions as follows: Marmara (11), Aegean (27), Mediterranean (14), Black Sea (30), Eastern-Anatolia (6), Central Anatolia (18) and South-Eastern Anatolia (5). (ÇT/BM)
