According to news bianet compiled from local and national newspapers, news sites and agencies, men killed 17 women in April; raped 15 women and girls, forced 16 women and girls to sex labor, sexually harassed 155 women and girls, inflicted violence on 25 women.
67% of the harassment cases taking place in media are from education institutions. Among the harassers, principals, vice principals, school cafeteria managers, shuttle drivers, janitors, managers of establishments around the school such as buffet-market took place in the 34 sexual harassment cases related to schools.
In the first four months of 2016, men killed at least 98 women; raped 50 women and girls; forced 131 women to sex labor; imposed violence on 120 women; sexually harassed 242 women and girls.
In the first four months of 2015, men killed 94 women; raped 42 women and girls; forced 102 women to sex labor; harassed 100 women.
Homicide
Men killed 17 women and two men near them in April.
18% of the homicides were committed despite protection orders or complaints for protection order to be issued.
29% of the women were killed for seeking divorce/break up.
Three men left the prison by getting permission murdered their wives and mothers-in-law. Two of them were in prison for stabbing their knives, the other was in prison for bodily harm. All three incidents took place in İzmir province.
Another man killed his mother whom he was quarrelling with after appearing in the court over him stabbing his elder brother.
18% of the homicides took place in the middle of the street.
76% of the women were killed by their ex or present partners. One woman was killed by her elder brother, one by her groom, one by her brother, eight by their husbands, one by her son, four by her lovers.
Men killed five women by knife, seven by firearms, two by strangling, one by axe, one by slitting in the throat, one by battering.
The cities where the homicides took place are Adana (1), Ankara (!), Antalya (1), Antep (1), Bursa (1), Denizli (1), Elazığ (1), İstanbul (2), İzmir (3), Karabük (1), Kayseri (1), Kocaeli (2), Mersin (1).
Rape
Men raped 15 women and girls in April.
Age of rapists dropped to 17, age of those exposed to rape dropped to 8. Two of the rape victims were mentally handicapped.
77% of the rapists were whom women/girls knew: Three women and girls were raped by their male relatives, one by her father’s friend, two by an imam, one by her neighbor, one by her teacher, two by men whom they met in social media, one by a male stranger, one by a man who introduced himself as cleaning worker, one by son of owner of the dorm where she stayed. In two cases, identity of the rapists didn’t take place in the reports.
Five of the rapes took place at the houses of women/girls, two in where they were detained, one in a hotel, one in street. The places where six rape incidents took place didn’t appear in media.
11 men were arrested in 14 rape incidents against 15 women and girls, two men have been released on condition of judicial control, decision of non-prosecution was issued on one man. In three cases, information as to legal procedure against perpetrators hasn’t been provided.
The cities where the rape incidents took place are iller Adana (1), Ankara (1), Antalya (1), Çorum (2), Dersim (1), İstanbul (1), İzmir (1), Kırşehir (1), Kocaeli (1), Konya (1), Sivas (1), Trabzon (1), Urfa (2).
16 women and girls were forced to sex labor in Adana and Muğla. 81% of them were not citizens of Republic of Turkey.
Violence – injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 25 women in April.
16% of the women were subjected to violence for seeking divorce/break up. 12% of violence cases took place in the middle of the street.
64% of the women were subjected violence by their partners, 12% of them by their ex-partners: 12 women were subjected to violence by their husbands, three by their lovers, one by her fiancée, two by their ex-husbands, one by her ex-fiancée, one by her brother, one by her father, one by her grandson, one by those deforcing her, two sex workers by their clients.
28% of the violence cases were close to being fatal; two men burned down the house of their wives who sought divorce: Six of the women were injured by knife, 14 by being battered, two by boiled water, one by pistol.
The cities where violence cases took place are Adana (1), Aksaray (2), Antalya (3), Edirne (1), Eskişehir (2), İstanbul (8), İzmir (1), Kocaeli (1), Kütahya (1), Muğla (1), Tekirdağ (2), Zonguldak (2).
Harassment
According to 51 harassment cases from 29 cities appearing in media in April, at least 155 women and girls have been subjected to harassment. 67% of the harassment reports are from education institutes.
Harassment cases related to education institutions
34 sexual harassment cases linked to education institutions were covered by media; at least 131 girl students were subjected to harassment.
Among the harassers, principals, vice principals, school cafeteria managers, shuttle drivers, janitors, managers of establishments around the school such as buffet-market took place in the 34 sexual harassment cases related to schools.
73% of the girl students were harassed by their teachers: 96 girl students were harassed by their teachers, three cafeteria managers, seven by principals, five by vice principals, four by buffet owner near the school, eight by the market owner next to the school, one by cleaning worker in the school, two by electrician working at the school, two by shuttle drivers, one by another student in school, one by an adult man intruding the school, one by a man wandering around the school.
83% of the students were subjected to physical violence, 12% to both physical and online harassment, 4% to online harassment, one girl student to verbal harassment.
Only 44% of the harassers were arrested; 15 of the harassers were suspended from duty. One-third of the arrestees comprised of non-teacher perpetrators (electrician working at school, owner of the buffet across the school, cafeteria manager, market owner next to the school, adult man intruding the school).
Administrative and/or legal investigations have been launched into the other harassers. Many harasser teachers were appointed to other schools during performing their duties at their schools, and others appointed to other schools without any legal actions taken against them. It was stated that a harasser teacher is “under surveillance of the principal”.

Harassment cases non-related to education institutions
16 harassment cases non-related to education institutions took place in media; at least 24 women and girls were subjected to harassment.
Girls below 18 consisted 46% of those subjected to harassment.
According to the reports covered by media, only four of the harassers were arrested.
Four women were harassed by men working at high ranks of their workplaces, one by her family doctor, one by man laborer working at the hospital, seven by men they didn’t know. Six of the girls were harassed by Trabzon Ministry of Family Provincial Directorate officer, one by her relative, one by her neighbor, two by her step fathers, one by a man she didn’t know.
While 21 women and girls were exposed to physical harassment, one woman was exposed to both physical and online harassment, two women to exhibitionism.
Four of the women and girls were subjected to harassment on street, four in their workplaces, three at their homes, two on the bus, two at the apartment entrances, one at a hospital, one in a clinic. The information as to the place of harassment against seven girls didn’t take place in the news.

Distribution by regions
In April, 228 cases of male violence, homicide, attempted murder, harassment, sexual violence, rape and injury took place in media in total.
28% of these occurred in Marmara Region, 21% in Aegean Region, 12% in Mediterranean Region, 12% in Black Sea Region, 11% in Southern Anatolia Region, 9% in Central Anatoli Region, 6% in Eastern Anatolia Region. (ÇT/TK)
