According to news reports bianet compiled from local and national newspapers, news sites and agencies, men killed at least 13 women, two children and two men who were next to the women at the moment of the murder; raped five women; harassed 12 women; forced nine women to sex work; sexually abused 30 girls; injured 41 women in the first month of 2018.
Alongside these incidents;
One woman was kidnapped by her brothers. No legal action was taken against her elder brothers whom she didn’t file a criminal complaint against, the woman was placed in a women’s shelter.
- One man took his wife and two daughters hostage.
- One man threatened his wife with death who attempted to break up
- One woman was found suspiciously dead.
- A woman sexually abused by her father committed suicide.
- Perpetrators couldn’t be identified in two femicides.
- Two women allegedly committed suicide this month in Van.
- Perpetrators of two women murdered in 2014 and 2017 were found.

According to bianet Male Violence Monitoring Report, men killed at least 290 women, 22 children and 34 men who were next to the women at the moment of the murder or tried to prevent the murder; raped 101 women; harassed 247 women; sexually abused 376 girls; injured 417 women in 2017. In addition to these murders; Perpetrators of 14 femicides are yet to be identified. 10 women and two girls were found suspiciously dead; the cases haven’t been solved yet. 14 women allegedly committed suicide. Femicide
Men killed at least 13 women and two men who were next to the women at that monet in January. Two of the 13 women were refugees from Syria, two from Afghanistan.
31% of the women were killed for attempting to divorce or break up. 54% of the women were killed by their husbands.
One woman was killed by a male relative; one by her ex-husband of religious marriage; six by their husbands; one by a man she knew from the neighborhood; one by her son. Acquaintanceship of one woman with her murdered wasn’t reported in the media.
Half of the women were killed with firearms.
Four women were killed with pistol, two with rifle, five with knife, one with axe, one by being battered with an object, one by being tortured.
Two murderers committed suicide after the murders.
The cities where femicides occurred are Afyon (1), Aksaray (1), Antep (2), Bilecik (1), Bursa (1), Hatay (1), İstanbul (1), İzmir (1), Karaman (1), Kocaeli (1), Maraş (1), Sivas (1).
Killings of children
Men killed two children in January to hurt or take revenge on women.
A man killing his children aged 2 and 4 called his wife whom he was about to get divorced and said, “I’ve killed your children, are you happy” and then committed suicide. It was learned that the woman filed complaint numerous times against the man but no precaution was taken.
Rape
Five rape incidents were covered by the media in January.
One woman was raped her father’s friend; one by her neighbor; one by a taxi driver; one by her landlord; one by a man she met on social media.
One of the raped women was a refugee from Syria.
The rapists were arrested, a rapist who is a special operation police officer was released. Two rapists are being searched.
The cities where the rape incidents occurred are Adana, İstanbul, İzmir, Mardin, Sakarya.
Sex work by force
Men forced nine women to sex work in January.
None of the women were citizen of Turkey. Three of the women from Moldovia, one from Russia, one from Uzbekistan, four from Uganda.
Six men were arrested, one man who was detained upon the complaint of a woman forced to sex work was released after he was deposed.
Harassment
Men harassed at least 12 women in January.
One third of the harassment incidents occurred in public places.
The other half of the women were subjected to digital harassment.
Six women were subjected to digital harassment; three to physical harassment; one to verbal harassment; one to exhibitionism; one to peeping.
58% of the women were harassed by male strangers.
Seven women were harassed by male strangers; one by her friend; one by her ex-husband; one by her employer; one by a café owner.
Only two of the 13 harassers were arrested; three were released on probation; one woman killed the harasser as she was defending herself. Legal proceedings about the other harassers weren’t covered by the media.
The cities where harassment incidents occurred are Antalya (2), İstanbul (1), Kayseri (1), Mersin (1), Nevşehir (1), Sakarya (1), Samsun (1), Sivas (1), Tekirdağ (1), Tokat (1).
Child abuse
Men sexually abused at least 30 girls in January.
One of the abused children was with disability.
At least three girls were raped, one got pregnant.
Eight of the 15 perpetrators were arrested, two of them were released on probation. Administrative and criminal investigation was launched against a high school principal but he wasn’t arrested. Legal proceedings about three harassers weren’t reported in the media.
Two men who abused five girls in total had criminal record for sexual assault in the past.
One girl was abused by her male relative; two by their fathers; one by her basketball coach; one by her neighbor; one by a canteen manager at her high school; one by the high school principal; four by minibus drivers; three by cleaning worker at the school; one by a man she knew; six by male strangers. Acquaintances of nine girls with the men who abused them weren’t reported in the media.
The cities where child abuse cases occurred are Adıyaman (9), Ankara (4), Antalya (2), Aydın (1), Bursa (1), Diyarbakır (2), Düzce (3), İstanbul (1), Sakarya (2), Tekirdağ (4).
Violence-injury
Men inflicted violence on at least 41 women in January. At least four of the women were severely injured.
Men who inflicted violence on four women were killed by women or women’s male relatives. 19.5% of the violence-injury incidents occurred in public places.
17% of the women were subjected to violence for attempting to divorce or break up.
One incident of violence occurred despite a restraining order, and another one despite woman’s complaints.
44% of the women were subjected to violence by their husbands.
One woman was subject to violence by her family; one by her ex-husband; three by ex-boyfriend; one (woman doctor) by patient’s relative; one by burglars breaking into her home; 18 by their husbands; one by her neighbor; two by her clients; one by her son; one by her student; five by their boyfriends; three by male strangers; one by her grandchildren’s friends. Identity of one assailant wasn’t covered by the media.
73% of the women were battered.
Five women were wounded with knife or sharp objects; two by being battered with objects; 30 by being battered; one by being tortured; two by rifle. One man fired on his ex-girlfriend’s home.
Only five of the 47 assailants were arrested. Seven assailants were released after being deposed. One assailant was released on probation and he still continues to threaten the woman on whom he inflicted violence. Legal proceedings about the others weren’t reported in the media. (ÇT/TK)
