Medical Association of Germany calling for release of Turkish Medical Association chair

Dr. Klaus Reinhardt, Chairperson of Medical Association of Germany, wrote a letter to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on October 27, 2022 and called for the release of Prof. Dr. Şebnem Korur-Fincancı, the Chairperson of the Medical Association of Turkey.

The letter is stating that Korur-Fincancı to be remanded in custody amounts to an assault to both freedom of expression and the autonomy of a medical association.

Also reminding that doctors dedicate themselves to the health of the society and that therefore bringing up violations of human rights is a duty of each doctor, the letter emphasized that doctor and human rights advocate identities of Korur-Fincancı were inseparably connected.

The letter also includes the statements and messages of the medical unions in Berlin, Hessen and Hamburg, the medical peace organization (IPPNW), the Democratic Doctors Association (VDÄÄ) and the union of medical students in Germany (The Marburger Bund) calling for immediate release of Dr. Şebnem Korur Fincancı.
