Mathematicians Gathered to Support Arrested Academics

Academics have gathered at the workshop in which academic Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kıvanç Ersoy would make speech if he wasn’t arrested.

Ersoy would give a speech at Boğaziçi University, İstanbul Mathematical Sciences Center within the scope of International Models and Groups Theory Workshop on March 24. He was arrested with Assist. Prof. Dr. Esra Mungan and Assist. Prof. Dr. Muzaffer Kaya for signing the declaration entitled “We will not be a party to this crime” on March 15.

His colleagues have turned the session of the workshop into a meeting about the academics. They voiced their demand for release of the three academics.

Prof. Dr. Ayşe Berkman, the Head of Department of Mathematics at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University of which Ersoy is an academic member explained how hardworking Ersoy is, whom she has known him as a student in his undergraduate years.

Turkish Mathematics Association President, Betül Tanbay stated how happy she is about the existence of such young and talented mathematics like Kıvanç Ersoy, and they as the association have started a petition for the release of the academics.

Assist. Prof. Dr. İpek Tuvay presented the joint study they planned to turn to an article if Ersoy wasn’t arrested.

Petition from his colleagues in Italy

Ersoy’s colleagues in Italy have started petition on change.org dedicated to Republic of Turkey European Union Permanent Representative, Selim Yenel.

In the petition, they have stated that Kıvanç Ersoy is a pacifist and against violence, and they are surprised with the arrest of Ersoy whom they know in person.

Kıvanç Ersoy

Ersoy graduated from Middle East Technical University, Department of Mathematics in 2002.

He continued his master and PhD at the same university’s department of mathematic.

He is working as an academic at Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University, Department of Mathematics.

He gave mathematics courses at Nesin Matematik Köyü (Nesin Mathematics Village) Undergraduate and Graduate Summer School in 2015.

Ersoy is also Education and Science Laborers Union İstnabul No.6 Universities Branch Legal Secretary. (BK/TK)
