Man who killed Yağmur Önüt sentenced to 16 years, 8 months in prison

A lawsuit for "willful murder" was filed against Egemen V. for killing Yağmur Önüt with a hunting rifle in Küçükçekmece, İstanbul, in 2016.

The Bakırköy 9th Heavy Penal Court sentenced the man to 5 years and 10 months in prison for "causing a death by gross negligence."

After an appeal by the plaintiffs, the file was sent to the Court of Cassation.

The 12th Penal Chamber of the Court of Cassation overturned the verdict and ruled that the defendant should be sentenced for "killing by eventual intention."

Egemen V., who was not under arrest, the mother of Yağmur Önüt, and their attorneys attended the hearing that was held at the Bakırköy 9th Heavy Penal Court after the Court of Cassation ruling.

In his defense statement, the defendant said, "I lost the person whom I was going to marry. I am very sorry. I lost the person whom I loved and was going to marry. I did not want this. My conscience is clear from this incident. The decision is yours. I do not accept the charges."

The court sentenced Egemen V. to 16 years and 8 months in prison for "killing by eventual intention."

The indictment

According to the indictment, Egemen V. and his girlfriend Yağmur Önüt were together in the home of his aunt on April 19, 2016. When they were fighting, a hunting rifle belonging to Egemen V.'s grandmother went off, killing Önüt.

A case was filed against V. for "killing by negligence" with the prosecution demanding a 9-year prison sentence.

An expert report changed the course of the case. According to the report, the rifle had no malfunction and the woman was shot in the neck from a close range.

After the report, the Küçükçekmece 6th Penal Court of First Instance gave a decision of non-jurisdiction and sent the file to the Bakırköy Heavy Pena Court.
