Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) Group Deputy Chairs Engin Altay, Özgür Özel and Engin Özkoç have requested that the latest developments in Syria's Idlib and the precautions to ensure the life safety of Turkey's soldiers there be debated in a general debate at the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) General Assembly.
Submitting a motion to the TBMM Speaker's Office, the CHP has underscored that the situation in Idlib has deteriorated and al-Nusra Front affiliated with the al-Qaeda dominate Idlib to a considerable extent.
Attitude of Russia and Iran
The CHP Group Deputy Chairs have reminded the Speaker's Office that "some of the Turkish Armed Forces' (TSK) observation points in Idlib have been besieged by the Syrian Army."
Referring to the recent losses of life in Idlib, the motion of the main opposition party has indicated that "all these developments show that the tension has been rapidly escalating in Idlib and the TSK and Syrian Army could come to clash with each other at any moment."
"Moreover, it needs to the considered that the attitudes of Russia and Iran might not be in favor of our country and the TSK elements in Idlib might be targeted by the terrorist organizations affiliated with al-Qaeda in the region", the motion of the party has warned further.
Security threat
"There is no doubt that the developments in Idlib are a big security threat for our country", the CHP has said and continued as follows:
"One of the heavists costs faced by our country as a result of the civil war raging in Syria since 2011 is Idlib. The fate of jihadist terrorist elements in the region, the conditions of the civilians heading for our country from Idlib, the life safety of our soldiers stationed in TSK observation points in Idlib and our border security are among the most urgent issues to be resolved.
"The pace of developments in the field, the urgency of the life safety of our soldiers in Idlib and the necessity of taking urgent precautions about the above-mentioned issues within the frame of international law necessitate the TBMM's rapid involvement in the incident."
Within this context, the main opposition CHP has requested that the Parliament discuss Idlib in a general debate. (DB/SD)
