Hundreds of edifices including Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera Building and the Bosporus Bridge will turn off their lights for an hour at 8:30 p.m. on March 25 to draw attention to climate change.
In addition to Beşiktaş, Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray sports clubs, 16 universities and 26 edifices will join the event in which over 400 worldwide edifices joined last year.
Also, a donation will be held for protection of the Mediterranean Forests in Earth Hour event organized by WWF-Turkey.
The Earth Hour campaign started in Australia in 2007. At the moment, it has spread to more than 150 countries in seven continents.
Why Mediterranean Forests
The Mediterranean Basin is one of the most important areas to be affected by climate change in Turkey.
According to WWF-Turkey, an intensive increase in temperature and drought is expected in the basin in the near future. This situation can both directly (drought, heat wave) and indirectly (fire, diseases, invasive species, extinction and migration of some species) lead to serious problems.
As the tress’ relatively long life spans prevent them from swiftly adapting environmental changes, the forests are among the most delicate ecosystems.
