A lawyer in the predominantly Kurdish-populated southeastern province of Şırnak was seriously injured after being run over by police.
The incident happened yesterday (April 10) when lawyer Serkan Karakaş, the head of the Center for Lawyers' Rights of the Şırnak Bar Association, pulled over his malfunctioned car and was checking it out.
A commissioner at the Şırnak Security Directorate pulled over his vehicle and drove backwards to hit the lawyer, the Şırnak Bar Association said in a statement. The lawyer was injured in his knees and underwent surgery.
"This situation shows that none of us have life safety," Rojhat Dilsiz, the chair of the bar, said today (April 11) denouncing the incident, according to a report by the Mesopotamia Agency (MA).
The police officer ran over the lawyer deliberately, Dilsiz said, adding that his statement was initially taken for "causing injury by negligence" and he was detained only after admitting the incident was deliberate.
He called on the Ministry of Interior to dismiss the police officer in question and said they will follow the incident for the perpetrator to receive the sentence he deserves. (AS/VK)
