According to stats by Laborer Health and Occupational Safety Assembly (İSİG), at least 141 workers lost their lives in January.
Of the 141 workers, 120 were workers or civil servants; 21 were self-employed. The 141 workers included two women, five children aged under 14, and 10 refugees/immigrants.
The occupational homicides occurred in business lines of agriculture, metal, transportation and municipality/general affairs.
Falling from him, shuttle/traffic accident and being buried in the wreckage constituted the highest rate of occupational homicides.
Occupational homicides in 50 cities
The largest number of occupational homicides occurred in İstanbul, Bursa and Antalya:
19 killings in İstanbul; 8 in Bursa; 6 each in Antalya, Kocaeli and Konya; 5 each in Adana, Aydın and İzmir; 4 each in Denizli, Hatay, Isparta, Karabük, Manisa; 3 each in Balıkesier, Rize, Şanlıurfa, Tekirdağ and Van; 2 each in Ankara, Çanakkale, Çorum, Diyarbakır, Eskişehir, Gaziantep, Kırklareli, Mardin, Mersin, Niğde and Ordu; 1 each in Adıyaman, Afyon, Artvin, Bitlis, Bolu, Düzce, Elazığ, Hakkari, Karaman, Kastamonu, Kayseri, Kırşehir, Muğla, Osmaniye, Sakarya, Samsun, Siirt, Tokat, Trabzon, Yalova, Zonguldak, Kuzey Kıbrıs, Syria and Tunisia.
Suicides
The İSİS conveyed the information that six workers attempted suicide.
The report covered the workers who tried to set their bodies on fire in front of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) building on January 12 and in front of the Balıkesir Municipality building on January 26.
Reasons: Debt, mobbing, unemployment
According to the report, at least 15 workers committed suicide in 2013; at least 25 in 2014; at least 59 in 2015; at least 90 in 2016; at least 89 in 2017.
The three reasons behind the suicides were pointed as debt, mobbing and unemployment.
