The Ministry of Justice has responded to the request for moving the trial of Onur Gencer from İzmir to Kayseri province.
Now arrested pending trial, Onur Gencer shot Deniz Poyraz to death in the İzmir Provincial Organization office of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) on June 17, 2021. The trial is held in İzmir.
After the attorney of Gencer applied to the Directorate General of Penal Affairs of the Justice Ministry and requested that the court case be held in Kayseri, the Directorate has rejected this request by sending a written correspondence to the arrested defendant's lawyer.
With this decision, it is ruled that the trial shall continue being heard in İzmir province. The next hearing of the Deniz Poyraz murder case will be held at the İzmir 6th High Criminal Court on April 29 at 9 am.
What happened?Onur Gencer stormed the HDP's İzmir provincial office on June 17 and shot party worker Deniz Poyraz dead. His social media posts revealed that he was a sympathizer of the nationalist Grey Wolves group. The indictment referred to the assailant's "diagnosis with anxiety disorder and mild depressive episodes" in 2016. The prosecution demanded an aggravated life imprisonment for Gencer on the charge of "premeditated wilful killing" and up to 7 years in prison on charges of "violating the immunity of workplace" and "damaging the buildings, facilities or property of the political parties or professional organizations." |
