The President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan appointed former head of 14th Penal Chamber, Mehmet Akarca as the supreme court of appeals prosecutor. Akarca sentenced the police officer Oral Emre Atar who killed Baran Tursun for disobeying stop warning to two years and one month on Nov. 25, 2007.
Mehmet Tursun, father of Baran Tursun, talked to bianet and evaluated the appointment.
Hüseyin Çapkın allegedly met Mehmet Akarca during the course of the trial
Mehmet Tursun pointed out Mehmet Akarca was appointed as a member of Supreme Court only after he sentenced police officer Oral Emre Atar to imprisonment and then promoted to the head of 14th Penal Chamber. Akarca has been appointed as the supreme court of appeals prosecutor now.
Mehmet Tursun:
“According to the information I have, former İzmir province Police Commissioner Hüseyin Çapkın met Mehmet Akarca during the course of the trial and stated the trial took place on the media too much and if police officers had received unreasonable penalties, policemen couldn’t have done their job across the country.”
Oral Emre Atar is still a police officer
“Atar was in prison for 18 months and now he is a police officer in Gümüşhane province. Normally, a person punished for more than two years cannot be a public officer. However, our son’s killer can be an officer because Mehmet Akarca had given a verdict including statements like “reckless killing, involuntary manslaughter etc.”
Mindset prefers the state rather than human beings
“Mehmet Akarca has a mindset prefers the state rather than human beings. He has been appointed as Supreme Court of Appeals Prosecutor by means of this mindset. We know for sure men like Mehmet Akarca will keep punishing killers nominally.”
Who is Mehmet Akarca?
Mehmet Akarca was born in Şirvan distirict of Siirt province in 1963. He graduated from Dokuz Eylül University Faculty of Law in 1986. He started to work in İzmir. Akarca was the Head of High Criminal Court in İzmir. He was appointed as a member of Supreme Court on Jan. 18, 2010 and was the Head of 14th Penal Chamber on Oct. 21, 2013. (EKN/BD)
