Journalist Zeynep Kuray was detained today (August 12) while she was following the protest of the workers of the company that built the Halkbank Plaza in the Ataşehir Financial Center in İstanbul.
The workers of the YDA GROUP, a contractor of Emlak Konut GYO, the state-run real estate developer, began protesting yesterday, demanding better working conditions and their rights.
Police did not allow the protest to continue and detained the workers and the journalist.
"Police are attacking the construction workers. I'm being detained," she wrote on Twitter.
She announced her release in another tweet a couple of hours later. "The bosses of the Emlak Konut GYO, with the guidance of a plainclothes police officer, filed a complaint against me for 'damaging public property," she wrote.
The Journalists' Association of Türkiye (TGS), the DİSK Basın-İş union and Erol Önderoğlu, the Reporters Without Borders (RSF) representative in Türkiye, had called on for the immediate release of the journalist in Twitter posts.
