Journalist Sezgin Kartal released after 160 days

On January 10, journalist Sezgin Kartal, a reporter for Karşı Mahalle, was taken in custody on the occasion of Journalists' Day and charged with "being a member of a terrorist organization" later that month. 

Following 160 days of detention, Kartal was released during his second trial hearing yesterday (June 22), with a travel ban imposed as a condition of his release.

The prosecutor had accused Kartal of disguising himself as a journalist and writing articles that promote the actions and ideology of a 'terrorist organization' through associated publications.

During the hearing, attended by Green Left Party (YSP) Deputy Celal Fırat, Kartal asserted his innocence and requested his release.

"Throughout my career as a journalist, I have never written articles endorsing any organization. If I were a member of such an organization, it would have been impossible for me to reside at the same address for 14 years, travel freely, and stay in hotels. Despite my non-membership, I have been detained for six months. I request my release", he said.

Contradictory evidence

The 4-page indictment, which includes a two-page historical background on outlawed organizations, referenced a seized computer with a photograph from September 26, 2014. Kartal is accused of being depicted in the photo with Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) members in Syria, claiming that there is a resemblance.

However, Meriç Eyüboğlu, Kartal's lawyer, argued that records undermined the evidence.

"According to the call records (HTS), his phone was switched off for a duration of two hours. It is alleged that Kartal crossed the border and took a photo during this period. However, the timing of the photo contradicts HTS records, thereby undermining the foundation of the case", the lawyer said.

The prosecutor at the hearing requested the continuation of the journalist's detention, citing a strong suspicion of guilt.

In response, Eyüboğlu countered, "My client is not affiliated with any organization. He has maintained the same residence and mobile phone number for many years. Detention should not be equated with punishment. We request his release under judicial control measures."

After a recess, the court announced its decision, ordering the release of Kartal with a travel ban imposed as a judicial control measure.

The trial was adjourned until October 31.
