Istanbul 2nd Criminal Court held the trial of Bekir Coşkun vs others, a case where Justice and Development Party (AKP) parliament members Metin Külünk, Mihriban Belma Satır, Tülay Selamoğlu, Sevde Beyazıt Kaçar, Sevim Savaşer and Ayşenur İslamoğlu filed against Bekir Coşkun for "defamation".
Bekir Coşkun has been convicted to 1 year-2 months-17 days of prison for "insulting parliament members" in his column "Painted Stairs" in Cumhuriyet Newspaper.
If Coşkun is to commit the same “crime” in five years, the execution process of the sentence will begin, as issued by the court.
AKP Manisa Parliament Member Selçuk Özdağ also filed a complaint but Public Prosecutor’s Office of Manisa issued a nolle prosequi for this.
