The İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) has raised public transport fares by 36 percent after a meeting of the Transport Coordination Center (UKOME) yesterday (December 24).
Also, school bus fares were increased by 27 percent.
The UKOME meeting was held by a request of the IMM, which stated that an increase in the fares became inevitable because of the increase in fuel and spare part prices following the Turkish lira's depreciation.
The Ministry of Transport representative in the UKOME, Serdar Yücel, said the opposition-led municipality's demand for an increase was "too high" given that the prices were increased in July as well.
The taxi owners' demand for a 60 percent increase, however, was reasonable, according to Yücel.
Both the municipality's and private sea transporters said they will have to reduce services if the prices remain the same.
