On the occasion of the second anniversary of the İstanbul repeat elections on June 23, 2019, the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality held a "June 23 Democracy Festival" yesterday evening (June 23).
Speaking at the event at Harbiye Cemil Topuzlu Open-Air Theater, Ekrem İmamoğlu, the Mayor of the opposition-led İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality, announced that they will support the students whose scholarships have been cancelled because they have been protesting Melih Bulu, who was appointed as the rector of Boğaziçi University by President and Justice and Development Party (AKP) Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan on January 2, 2021.
Ekrem İmamoğlu said, "The government office for the university students whose scholarshiphs have been cancelled at Boğaziçi University because of their democratic stance is the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality. They can come, their scholarships are ready."

CLICK - Boğaziçi University: 100 students stripped of scholarships, loans for protesting rector
What happened?
The Student Loans and Dormitories Institution (KYK) has canceled the loans and scholarships of at least 100 students for protesting Prof. Melih Bulu, Boğaziçi University's appointed rector. The students have been asked to start paying back their loans as of July 2023.
Students,academics and alumni of the university have been protesting Bulu since his appointment by a Presidential decision issued on January 2, demanding his resignation and elections for a new rector.
The KYK decision was based on article 30 of the Scholarship-Loan Regulation, which stipulates the termination of loans and scholarships of students who have been suspended from school for at least one semester. (KÖ/SD)
