Ekrem İmamoğlu, the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) candidate who won the June 23 İstanbul mayoral election by a landslide, has announced that he will assume office tomorrow (June 27).
"My dear townspeople, the handover ceremony for the Mayor of the İstanbul Metropolitan Municipality will be held on June 27, Thursday at 18:30," he said on Twitter.
The Governorship of İstanbul also released a statement, saying that the handover ceremony will be held tomorrow.
Speaking to reporters about why the mandate was not given today, he said, "I think it is about the routine. I didn't question it much frankly. I don't have information on the reason for it. There plan for tomorrow, we respect that."
After İmamoğlu won the canceled March 31 elections, he was not given a mandate for 17 days.
The CHP candidate won the rerun election on June 23 by receiving 54.2 percent of the votes. (EKN/VK)
