10th Istanbul Gathering for Freedom of Expression will take place on April 9 and 10 in InterContinental Hotel Bosphorus Hall.
Istanbul Gathering for Freedom of Expression organized by Initiative Against Thought Crime(!?) once in every two years will be realized this year with the cooperation of bianet, Transparency International Turkey and Truth Justice Memory Center.
Impunity, freedom of press and expression, defamation lawsuits, censor and state intervention in the legal system will be discussed in the gathering which will last for two days, with participation of various international and national NGOs.
Cumhuriyet daily’s Editor-in-Chief Can Dündar and its Ankara representative Erdem Gül, besides representatives from rights organizations will be the guests to the censorship and self-censor forum on the first day of the gathering on which freedom of expression issues in Turkey will be discussed.
On the second day to begin with opening speeches of representatives from international organizations, guests from Russia, Israel, Ghana, Romania, Norway, Macedonia and Gulf Region will talk about the situation of freedom of expression in the world under moderatorship of Prof. Dr. Turgut Tarhanlı. Malaysian cartoonist Zunar will stage a performance together with his colleague in Turkey Sadık Pala.
The last forum in the gathering “Wars, Refugees and Their Reflexions on Freedom of Speech” will be moderated by PEN Vice President Eugene Schoulgin. (EA/DG)
