In protest against Turkey's withdrawal from the İstanbul Convention by a Presidential decision, the Free Young Woman (ÖGK) platform and Socialist Women's Assemblies (SKM) wanted to hold a press statement in front of the Presidency's Communications Office in Konak, İzmir.
As reported by Mezopotamya Agency (MA), women opened a banner that read "We will defend the convention, break down fascism."
"We do not accept the termination of the convention. While several women are massacred in this land every day, murderers walk on the streets freely. While your male justice puts women and women's struggle on trial, we, as women, have never stayed silent and will not do so," they said.
They applauded in protest
Women also chanted the slogans "We don't hush, we don't fear" and "Not male justice, but real justice". While they were hanging the banner on the door of the Presidency's Communications Office, the police intervened. While the women applauded in protest, the police detained them.
The women were reportedly battered during the detention. Taken into custody, Gül Gök, Meryem Yıldırım, Güngör Didar Gül and İrem Nur Çelikbaş have been taken to the Security Branch to take their statements. (EMK/SD)
