Fostering solidarity among women, the International Women's Solidarity Association (IWSA) İstanbul Branch has granted honorary membership to Nazan Moroğlu, the Coordinator of the Union of İstanbul Women's Organizations (İKKB) and the Vice Chair of İstanbul Bar Association.
Speaking at the ceremony organized on this occasion, Moroğlu said that she was honored to be granted the honorary membership.
She briefly stated, "In these days when we need gender equality more than ever before, it is a duty for all of us to wage a struggle for democracy by defending equality. I would like to say that I am honored to be in this community. I would like to extend my thanks to the entire IWSA, especially to Şima Sunder, who takes up the position of the Chair of the İstanbul Branch."
'Violence is a public health problem'
In her speech at the ceremony, Moroğlu also shared the solution offers for violence against women that she mentioned at a Parliamentary meeting of "Current Developments in the Struggle Against Violence."
"Especially when women do not have economic independence and cannot adequately participate in the decision making processes, it makes them more weak and vulnerable to violence and, most of the time, it leads to endurance of violence. That nearly half of women are subjected to violence primarily has a negative effect on children," said Moroğlu and briefly added:
"Thus, it leads to a gradual decay of the social structure. For this reason, it needs to be kept in mind that violence - the most serious consequence of gender inequality - is a social problem, a public health problem. We will keep solidarizing against this inequality, we will struggle together."
