On November 3, Human Rights Association (IHD) will start a “life vigilance” to demand the immediate release of 526 sick inmates (with 154 in serious condition) across Turkey’s prisons. While the protest will last for two days, IHD released a video to have the word out and call for action.
Our recent report released on September 10 cites that there are at least 526 sick inmates across Turkey’s prisons and 154 are in serious condition, IHD Executive Board member Necla Şengül told bianet previously.
Şengül also urged the authorities to open prisons for the inspection of human rights associations.
“Authorities must open prisons to NGOs. Including prison and hospital cells. Sick inmates conditions must be improved.”
“Inmates must be trained on human rights topics. At least authorities must release inmates right to apply to human rights associations. Sometimes prison authorities block related content.”
According to Civil Society Association in Execution System (CISST) and Justice Ministry, the number of inmates who died in prisons are as follows: 252 in 2010, 268 in 2011, 260 in 2012.
“At least 5 coffins leave Turkey’s prison on a weekly basis,” CISST said. (AS/BM)
