Hüsnü Öndül, who was president of the Human Rights Association (IHD) from 1999 to 2004, has been reelected as president.
In yesterday's (24 September) general meeting, the 17 members of the steering committee were also chosen. Only four of them are women.
Background
Öndül is a lawyer and co-founder of the IHD, the Turkish Human Rights Foundation (TIHV) and the Modern Lawyers' Association (CHD). He wrote the "Ankara Torture Reports" of 1988, 1989 and 1990 for the IHD Ankara branch, a book entitled "The Copenhagen Political Criteria and Turkey" for the IHD head office, and "Turkish Urban Rights Legislation" for the Turkish Union of Chambers of Engineers and Architects (TMMOB). He prepared the projects "Training of Lawyers in Individual Appeals to the European Court/Commission of Human Rights" and "Education of Educators" for the IHD head office.
He published a book of poetry entitled "Who are we?" in 1975, and "Human Rights Articles" in 1997. He has been writing for the Evrensel and Özgür Gündem newspapers once a week since 2001. Öndül is also a contributor to the "Human Rights Reporting" book published by the IPS Communications Foundation Publications. (TK/AG)
