The hunger strike initiated by 50 volunteers in the provincial office of the Democratic Regions Party (DBP), now in its fourth day, is soon to spread to prisons. The strikers are demanding a meeting with Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) leader Abdullah Öcalan.
According to a report of the Fırat News Agency (ANF), 35 individuals in seven different prisons will join the hunger strike as of September 15.
Groups of five people from Diyarbakır D-Type Prison, Siirt E-Type Prison, Gebze Women’s Prison, Kandıra F-Type Prison, Kırıklar F-Type Prison and Tarsus Prison will join the strike in the first stage and prisoners from other prisons will follow in groups, said the report.
Juvenile detention centers and children’s wards will not participate in the strike. (EKN/DG)
