Tuğba Hezer, Van MP of People’s Democratic Party (HDP) has brought the topic of arrested students to the parliament’s agenda.
In the parliamentary question submitted to the response of Bekir Bozdağ, the Minister of Justice, she has pointed out to the violations of arrested and convicted students’ rights to education and health.
Pointing out that arrested students being able to continue their education constitutes an element of fundamental rights and freedoms, Hezer has stated that there were still no legislative regulations despite ministry’s statements for treating the issue of arrested students.
“How many can continue their education?”
Hezer has asked Minister Bozdağ about the number and education situation of students in prison under the age of 30 arrested and convicted on the grounds of Anti-terror Law (TMK). The parliamentary question also has included issues regarding the reason for arresting the students, arresting through anonymous witness and the presence of works conducted by the Ministry concerning the arrested students.
Other questions submitted to Bozdağ concerning the imprisoned students’ rights to education and health are as follows:
* What measures does your Ministry take against the violation of the imprisoned students’ rights to education?
* How many of the imprisoned students are able to continue their education? Do you have any work conducted in collaboration with education institutions serving the purpose of enabling imprisoned students to continue their education?
* How many arrested and convicted students are there who need to undergo medical examination regularly? To what extent are arrested or convicted students able to make use of health care services?
* Is tuberculosis patient Resul Özbey who is held in Van F-type Prison able to make use of health care services under prison conditions? Is his illness being taken into consideration regarding the nutritions he receives? (BK/DG)
