The "Kakava-Hıdrellez Festivals" organized every year in Edirne started with Kakava fire set, ended today (May 6) in the morning hours by Tunca River. Those joining the festivals have left their votive candles in the Tunca River.
Lots of people from Turkey and abroad poured in Edirne which is predominantly Romani in Hıdrellez, the symbol of abundance and wealth, herald of spring. The participants jumping over the fire have thrown their votive candles into the river. (NV/TK)
Hıdrellez Hıdırellez is celebrated as the day on which Prophets Hızır (Al-Khidr) and Ilyas (Elijah) met on the earth. Hıdırellez starts on May 5 night and falls on May 6 in the Gregorian calendar and April 23 in the Julian calendar. It is celebrated throughout the Turkic world. | |
Kakava Kakava is a celebration event of Romani people. Its place of origin is Egypt and Front Asia. According to Gypsy/Roma mythology and belief, Kakava is the transformation of miraculous events to "a belief" based on oppression towards another society in times of ancient Egypt God-King pharaoh living together with Kopt people. |
