HDP Women’s Group: Investigate Suspicious Death of Rabia Naz and Other Children

Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Women's Parliamentary Group has requested that a Parliamentary inquiry be launched against the irregularities and impunity committed in investigating and prosecuting suspicious deaths, especially that of 11-year-old Rabia Naz Vatan and other children.

The Parliamentary inquiry into the death of Rabia Naz submitted by HDP Ankara MP Filiz Kerestecioğlu was previously rejected by the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and Nationalist Movement Party (MHP).

'Death of Rabia Naz not effectively investigated'

Signed by women MPs of the party and submitted to the Speaker's Office of the Grand National Assembly of Turkey (TBMM) by HDP Group Deputy Chair and Mersin MP Fatma Kurtulan, the Parliamentary inquiry has indicated the the suspicious death of 11-year-old Rabia Naz Vatan has not been solved for over a year as her death is not effectively investigated and the evidence was deliberately spoiled, as alleged by her father Şaban Vatan.

"The detention of Şaban Vatan, who has been waging a struggle for justice to solve his daughter's death, has raised the suspicions that Rabia Naz's death was deliberately covered up by political power holders, which has caused public outrage", the women MPs have stated further.

'Establish a Parliamentary Investigation Commission'

The MPs have emphasized, "Considering the strong allegations that the traffic accidents involving politicians, power and rank holders and their relatives were also covered up in different periods in the past, the absence of an effective investigation into the suspicious death of an 11-year-old child has been reinforcing distrust in justice."

Accordingly, the Women's Group of the HDP has requested that a Parliamentary Investigation Commission be established in order to investigate the reasons for violations, irregularities and impunity committed in the investigation and prosecution of suspicious deaths, especially that of Rabia Naz and other children, and to specify the necessary precautions to prevent similar deaths in the future.
