The Women's Assembly of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has launched a campaign of "No to Women's Poverty" under the title of "Justice for Women". The campaign of the party was shared with the public at a press conference held in İzmir province today (April 12).
Meeting at the HDP İzmir Provincial Office, HDP İzmir Co-Chair Besriye Tekgür, HDP İzmir MP Serpil Kemalbay and HDP Central Women's Coordination member Berna Çelik addressed the reporters.
Taking the floor at the conference, Tekgür underlined that the male-dominant mindset does not have any tolerance for seeing women in any field of life, stressing that it wants to confine women to houses.
With this recent campaign, the party aims to listen to women's problems on site and develop solutions for these problems. Accordingly, Tekgür announced that they will meet the women who are employed in precarious and unregistered jobs in workshops and under the counter.
Tekgür also shared information about their upcoming visits in this context. On April 13, the party will visit the women doing piecework in textile workshops and Romani women. Next day, they will meet the women who cook stuffed mussels, peddlers and the women who bake village bread.
On the same day, a round-table meeting will be held to discuss women's poverty with women's organisations. On April 15, in Aydın, the women working in strawberry fields and workshops will be visited.
'Economic crisis has deepened'
Speaking at the conference, Kemalbay underlined that poverty, which has been mounting amid the COVID-19 pandemic, targets women:
"We, as the HDP, made a call for guaranteed economic support for everyone in the face of the outbreak, we have always defended it. However, turning a deaf ear to all these calls, the government has deepened the economic crisis. Women have been most affected by this."
