Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Spokesperson Ebru Günay held her weekly press briefing at the HDP Central Office in Ankara today (February 24) and talked about the developments in Ukraine.
Referring to Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Günay said, "The developments unfolding in Ukraine is the hegemonic war between the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) and Russia. We all know that this war brings nothing other than death and destruction to people."
Stressing that negotiations and diplomatic methods must be applied in this process, Günay briefly stated the following:
"The military expansionism of NATO and Russia in the name of global peace is never a solution for problems; it is a method that leaves the problems unresolved without making them any deeper.
"More importantly, the expansionist policies pursued with military methods threaten world peace and it is unacceptable.
'UN and OSCE must intervene'
"We reiterate our call to international powers and the UN to do their share and take action to ensure that peace prevails in the developments in Ukraine and problems are solved with peace and dialogue.
"By taking action, international powers such as the United Nations and the Organization for Security and Co-Operation in Europe (OSCE) must ask the people in the regions that want independence. Peoples' right to determine their own future must be left to people.
"A perspective of resolution respecting the will of the people must be developed. Therefore, we would like to once again call on from here especially the United Nations to ensure a ceasefire, to introduce urgent measures and to take action in the face of the developments that have been going on in Ukraine and have caused the conflict this morning."
'AKP bases politics on war'
Referring to the Justice and Development Party (AKP), HDP's Günay said that "the AKP is a ruling party which bases its entire politics on war and takes a position by provoking wars in especially foreign policy."
Raising concerns about the destruction, displacement and death caused by wars on the part of society, HDP Spokesperson Ebru Günay "reminded the government that it must play a peaceful role by siding with not war, but with the will of the peoples and peace."
Talking about the potential economic results of the developments in Ukraine for Turkey, she said, "Given the economic crisis in Turkey as well, it must base its politics on a consideration of the country's and peoples' future by siding with peaceful politics." She added, "The government must side with peace; we have always said this as a party and will continue to do so." (RT/SD)
