Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Spokesperson Gürkan Kubilay has held a press conference on yesterday's deal between Turkey and the US on the military operation that was launched into northern Syria on October 9.
"First of all, we want to underscore that the whole Middle East, especially Syria, needs peace and fraternity forever, not just for five days," Kubilay said, referring to the 120-hour suspension of the operation according to the deal.
"Problems of this country, this land cannot be solved through war. The Kurdish question is a socio-political problem that has deep historical roots. Throughout the history of the republic, policies based on war and violence did not produce anything but a deadlock.
"The only way Turkey did not try is peace. We told the government many times, we say it again: The Kurdish question can only be resolved with the Kurds. The key to the solution is not in Washington or Moscow. It is in Ankara, Diyarbakır and İmralı."
'Safe zone' includes Kurdish cities
Kubilay pointed out that the "safe zone" that Turkey plans to create in northern Syria is mostly populated by the Kurds.
"About 70 percent of the Syrian Kurds live in this 30-kilometer deep area," he said, adding that hundreds of thousands of Kurds and northern Syrians have been displaced since Turkey's operation began.
"Steps must be taken for the 350 thousand displaced northern Syrians to return their homes," he said. (AS/VK)
