Turkish Armed Forces’ (TAF) military operation into Afrin was on the agenda of the Green Party, which held its extraordinary congress in Hannover, Germany on Sunday (January 28).
“It contravenes international law”
The aforementioned motion submitted by the delegates in the congress was approved, according to Deutsche Welle. In the motion, the TAF’s military operation was described as “it contravenes international law”.
Leopard 2 tanks had come to agenda
“Crossing into Norther Syria, President [Recep Tayyip] Erdoğan is adding fuel to the fire”, the motion stated.
Allegations that Germany-made Leopard 2 tanks are used in the Afrin operation sparked reactions in Germany.
In its statement, the government said, “We have no information as to the tanks being used in the operation”.
The press in Germany also stated that Erdoğan government tries to put pressure on immigrants who live in Germany and don’t support the government.
FM Gabriel had said that “it will be decided by the new government”
Federal Government of Germany has imposed restriction on arms export to Turkey due to the tension between Ankara and Berlin.
In his interview with Spiegel on Thursday (January 25), Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Sigmar Gabriel said that no decisions will be taken about critical issues such as modernization of tanks sold to Turkey until the new government is formed, and this “critical” decision will be taken by the new government.
