In an interview to weekly Der Spiegel magazine, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Germany Sigmar Gabriel from the Social Democratic Party (SPD) responded to questions about arms sales to Turkey from Germany right ahead of Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkey Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu.
According to a report by Deutsche Welle Türkçe, Gabriel said that even though Turkey is a partner in fight against Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) as a NATO member, “German Federal Government doesn’t approve a large number of arms export”.
“This situation will remain like this”
Gabriel said, “This situation will remain like this unless [Deniz] Yücel case is resolved”. Gabriel stressed that “overall developments in Turkey” are important for Germany as well as the situation of German prisoners in Turkey.
Deniz Yücel was arrested on charges of “propagandizing for a terror organization” and “inciting people to enmity and hostility” in the last February.
Die Welt newspaper calls for release of Yücel everday.
