Gendarmerie raided the Ekotopya (Ecologic Utopias) Youth Camp in Sinop. Greens Party co-spokesperson Ümit Şahin told bianet that the governorship had wanted the camp evacuated. The 20th camp of Ekotopya was raided by the Gendarmerie today.
According to the statement the Greens Party made today (August21), the eleven people who organized a sit-in in front of the Atomic Energy Institution of Turkey (TAEK) at Sinop to protest the nuclear plant planned to be built in the area were taken into custody.
Four of those taken into custody were Ekotopya camp members and three among these four were foreign nationals. The other two were the members of Sinop’s City And Life Without Nuclear Association (SİNYAD). The eleven people who had been taken into custody were released.
Şahin who demanded that the camp in Sinop be shut down was very clear about the statement made by Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan that “They organized a demonstration in Sinop, but the first nuclear plant will be built not in Sinop, but in Akkuyu Mersin. They got the address wrong”:
“If so then they should shut down the TAEK building in Sİnop.”
The European Youth Movement (EYFA) and the local groups organize the Ekotopya Meeting every year in different towns of the world. (BÇ/EZÖ/TB)
