The first hearing of the case concerning the death of Hasan Ferit Gedik has been canceled due to “security reasons”. While a riot broke outside and inside the courtroom, suspects reportedly attacked deputies.
Hasan Ferit Gedik (21) was killed by gunfire on September 29, 2013 during a march against drug dealers in Istanbul’s Gülsuyu neighborhood.
Berrin Çelen, the penal judge, noted that suspects assaulted deputies and victim family members by “kicks and punches” and resisted the intervening security officers.
“After these attacks, the hearing can’t be resumed,” Çelen said. The hearing was set to September 4.
The incident took place as case attorney attempted to join the hearing room. While the security officers prevented their access, an argument broke. A fight occurred when Hasan Ferit Gedik’s mother Nuray Gedik was not admitted in the courtroom.
Tensions rose in the hearing room, leaving CHP deputies Melda Onur, Mahmut Tanal, İlhan Cihaner and Hüseyin Aygün as well as artist Hilmi Yarayıcı assaulted.
What happened?
After his death, Gedik’s funeral couldn’t be held for three days due to the unrest around his neighborhood.
The autopsy report showed that Gedik was killed by 6 bullets. His clothes at the time murder, a vital evidence, disappeared during the investigation.
The case indictment was completed in May 2014.
Drafted by Prosecutor Nihat Demir, the case indictment 35 defendants (15 jailed) with the various charges “premeditated assault”, “forming a crime organization", “premeditated murder", “being a member of a crime organization", “attempted murder", “qualified vandalism, “depriving individuals of their freedom", “concealing or modifying crime evidence to help culprits”, “influencing lawmakers" and “property damage”.
Suspects Mert Kazan, Ferhat Keleş, Adem Köşgen, Ümit Yeşilkaya, Doğukan Çep, Emrah Ok, Ekrem İnalkaç, Ercan Kütük, Mete Barış Durak, Murat Kesgin, Ercan Çiftçi, Hasan Taşhan, Şahin Eren, Yakup Dalkılıç, Zafer Turhan, Mesut Turhan and Tarkan İmeçtemur have been charged with “pre-meditated murder and attempted murder”.
The case indictment also noted that the crime instruments were concealed and some suspects helped others’ runaway.
Suspects are charged with various prison sentences from 11 to 269 years. (AS/BM)
