Justice and Development Party (AKP) Spokesperson, Ömer Çelik in the press release he issued following Central Executive Board (MYK) meeting has declared that AKP’s candidate for Parliamentary Speakership is İsmail Kahraman.
Former Chair of National Turkish Students Union (MTTB) İsmail Kahraman is also known as the creator of name of the AKP.
MTTB and Bloody Sunday
While MTTB was an organization under influence of Kemalist and left-Kemalist ideology during 1946-1965, it functioned as a paramilitary organization against public opposition by becoming an anti-communist focal after nationalist Rasim Cinsli elected as the chair in 1965.
MTTB made its new with the attack it launched on left-wing people marching on Taksim square to protest U.S. imperialism on February 16, 1969. The attack left two people dead, more than 100 others injured.
İsmail Kahraman was the chair of MTTB at the time of the “Bloody Sunday”.
Who is Kahraman?
İsmail Kahraman was born in Rize in 1940.
He graduated from İstanbul University, Faculty of Law. He was elected MP from İstanbul in 20th and 21st parliamentary terms.
He served as Minister of Culture in 54th government.
He was the Chairperson of the Board of Trustees at Recep Tayyip Erdoğan University.
How is parliamentary speaker elected?
In the first two voting, two thirds of total member (367) will be sought.
In case 367 votes cannot be reached, absolute majority vote (276) will be sought in the third voting.
