Former Hakkari Vice Co-Mayor Fatma Yıldız has been arrested on charge of “[illegal] organization membership”.
Provincial General Assembly member Selahattin Kurt and Democratic Regions Party (DBP) former provincial manager Kenan Kaya were arrested on the same charge besides Yıldız, who was detained a week ago in Hakkari,
As of today, in total 34 DBP co-mayors are in prison.
What had happened?
Elected in 2014 as co-mayors for Hakkari province, Dilek Hatipoğlu and Nurullah Çiftçi were arrested due to their self-governance declarations in August 2015, and were sentenced to 15 years in prison on charge of “disrupting unity and integrity of the state”.
Fatma Yıldız was chosen as Vice Mayor following the arrests.
On September 11, 2016 Vice Governor Cüneyt Epçim was appointed as trustee to the municipality and Yıldız was relieved of duty. (ÇT/TK)
