The footage recorded by an on-duty police tank at the time of Berkin Elvan’s shooting was shown at the parliament today.
The aforementioned video was released within a press conference held by Republican People’s Party deputy Hüseyin Aygün, Elvan Family and their attorneys.
Watching the footage for the first time, Gülsüm Elvan, Berkin’s mother, reportedly had a nervous breakdown, cursing those who are responsible. Upon her reaction, she was escorted out of the conference room.
Suspected policeman already identified
Analyzed by police authorities, the footage “underlines the obviousness of suspected policemen”.
Criminal Bureau, in charge of the investigation, also added that no molotov cocktails, bombs, fireworks or weapons were thrown at the police from the incident area.
Footage pending for months
Hüseyin Aygün reminded that while the aforementioned footage had been submitted months ago, the names of four top suspect policemen have yet to be turned in to the prosecutor, resulting in the blockage of the investigation.
“Berkin’s mother and father met with Parliament Chairman Cemil Çiçek yesterday. Cemil Çiçek said he would follow up on the case. So will we.
“The names of the policemen must be turned in immediately, so that a public prosecution could be launched.”
Footage claimed to not exist
Elvan Family Attorney Engin Gökoğlu also informed on the case investigation, claiming that it was abandoned several times.
“We had to find the witnesses ourselves. The footage was also said to not exist in the beginning. Then it was attached to the case,” he said.
Gökoğlu also reminded that only one policeman was included in the prosecution and the case already changed four prosecutors.
“However, none of them completed the investigation. The incident took place under the responsibility of Istanbul Governor’s Office, Police Headquarters and Riot Police Authorities.” (AS/BM)
