Five soldiers have been killed and five others have been wounded in artillery shelling by Syrian government forces on Turkey's military post in Taftanaz, Idlib, the Ministry of National Defense has announced.
Turkey immediately retaliated against the attack with intense fire, it added.
The troops were sent to the area to "ensure Turkey's border security and prevent migration", the ministry further stated.
Presidency Communications Director Fahrettin Altun also said in a tweet that Turkey "responded in kind" to the attack. "The war criminal who ordered this treacherous attack did not only target Turkey but the entire international community," Altun remarked.
Amid the recent advance of the Syrian government in Idlib, Turkey set up several military posts in Seraqib and Taftanaz areas in the province.
In a previous attack by Syrian forces on February 3, one civilian personnel and seven soldiers were killed. (TP/VK)
