Five children lost their lives by drowning in irrigation canals in Osmaniye, Adana and Maraş provinces today and yesterday (April 26-27).
Osmaniye: Three children lost their lives
In Osmaniye province, Narin (15) and Remziye Büyükçay (9) went adrift in the irrigation canal of the State Hydraulic Works (DSİ) near Kırmıtlı Village. As part of the search and rescue efforts for the missing children, the water flowing to the irrigation canal was cut.
The dead bodies of the two children were found some 900 meters away from the point where they fell into water. Taken outside the canal, the bodies of the sisters were sent to the Osmaniye Public Hospital for autopsy.
In this incident that happened yesterday, one of the four children playing near the DSİ's irrigation canal slipped and fell into the water. The other three jumped in to save the first child. While the people in the vicinity took two children out of the water, Narin and Remziye Büyükçay sisters got missing. Saadet Karataş was also taken to the hospital, but has lost her life.
The treatment of the other child is still ongoing.
Adana: Disabled child of Syrian worker family
In Adana province, a child with mental disability fell into the water and lost her life. The incident happened in the Yalnızca Neighborhood in Merkez Yüreğir District. Kadrah and Muhammed Alhasan, the parents from Syria working as agricultural workers, started searching for their daughter Azize Alhasan as she did not return to the tent where they were staying.
The slippers of the child were found near the irrigation canal. Realizing that Azize Alhasan went adrift in the water, her relatives got into the water and took the child out. They also called an ambulance.
The paramedics arrived at the scene of the incident. Examining the child, they saw that she had lost her life. Her deceased body has been sent to the Adana Forensic Medicine Institution for autopsy.
Maraş: An 8-year-old child
In the Pazarcık District of Maraş province, an 8-year-old child fell into the water and died. Deniz Bedel, playing with her twin near the DSİ's irrigation canal in Nefsidoğanlı Neighborhood, disappeared. Upon her twin's call, their relatives took the child out of the water.
Deniz Bedel was taken to the Pazarcık Public Hospital by paramedics, but she has lost her life despite all efforts. The deceased body of the child has been taken to the Forensic Medicine Institution for autopsy. (AÖ/SD)
